The issuance and processing of International Driving Permits (IDP) for tourists in Thailand are carried out through the IDA Regional Branch from abroad.

The process does not require any medical examinations, driving tests or additional assessments, as the IDP is issued solely on the basis of a valid National Driving Licence.

Approved documents comply with the 1949 and 1968 UN Conventions on Road Traffic.
DEFINITIONS:
IDP from the International Drivers Association is an internationally recognized document, serving as the official translation of a National Driver's License for driving and car rental abroad. The IDP is an A6-sized booklet that complies with the standards of the Zheneva Convention on Road Traffic and includes translations in 11 international languages.
National Driver License, in accordance with the relevant International Conventions, is a plastic card with a pinkish background, the size of a standard business card (86 x 54 mm). Obtaining it requires passing exams with the traffic police authorities and it is issued for a period of 10 years. The National Driver's License is made according to international standards but does NOT have the status of an International Driving Permit.

FAQ

An IDP is an officially recognized translation of your National Driving Licence into 11 international languages. It is required for driving, renting a car, or presenting to traffic authorities in many countries abroad, in accordance with the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna UN Conventions on Road Traffic.
Yes. The IDP issued through IDA's international branches is an official multilingual translation of your existing National Driving Licence. It does not replace your licence — it accompanies it, confirming your driving entitlements in a format recognized by authorities and rental companies worldwide.
IDA processes IDP applications with a standard turnaround of 1 hour. An electronic PDF version is issued the same day and can be used immediately for pre-registration with car rental companies, while the physical document is dispatched separately.
The applicable convention is determined by the country that issued your National Driving Licence. If your country is a signatory to the 1968 Vienna Convention, an IDP is issued under that standard. If your country follows the 1949 Geneva Convention, the corresponding format is issued. IDA issues both types, accepted in over 180 countries.
Yes. Every IDP issued by IDA is assigned a unique ID number and entered into the IDA Central Database. Authorities, rental companies, and private individuals can verify the document at any time via ida.or.at/check-idp.
No tests, medical examinations, or additional assessments are required. The IDP is issued solely on the basis of a valid National Driving Licence. Simply submit your application with the required documents — photo and licence details.
The IDP is typically valid for one to three years. It covers the same vehicle categories (A, B, C, D, etc.) as stated on your original National Driving Licence. No additional categories can be added beyond those already on your national licence.
In many countries, car rental companies are legally required to request an IDP in addition to your national licence — particularly if your licence is not in Latin script. An IDP removes any legal ambiguity, speeds up the rental process, and protects you during police checks or in the event of an accident.
